What we review

Every time we review any online sports betting site we always take a few factors into consideration. These factors are:

Betting markets

The best online sports betting sites offer bettors more than just sports; they also offer live sports and in-play odds.

Betting offers

Sportsbooks aren’t always good at offering good promotions. We always take a look at the regularity, and the standard of betting offers on the best NJ sports betting websites.

Great welcome bonus

Bettors are often attracted to sports betting sites by the welcome bonuses. As the NJ sportsbook market is still quite new, each site should offer a great welcome bonus. Bettors need to feel rewarded for spending their time and money online. This is why we look for sportsbooks that offer deposit bonuses, free spins, and even free bet tokens.

Live streaming

These days, bettors expect to see live streamed action. We take a look at which NJ online sportsbooks offer live streaming and whether bettors are charged for it.

Licenses

We make sure that every sportsbook we review is licensed by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement.

Payment options

Offering bettors a wide choice of deposit and withdrawal methods is essential. In addition to checking what they offer, we also research how long it takes for payments to be made/money to be withdrawn.

Customer support

Great customer support is key. We take a look at whether customer support is offered 24/7 and how many contact options the bettor has.

Mobile betting

The majority of sportsbooks allow bettors to access their site via an app. We take a look at how good the apps are and whether bettors can place the same types of bets as they can via their computer.

Reputation

A sportsbook should have a good reputation based on reviews bettors have left. When considering a sportsbook’s reputation, we also factor in our experience with the sportsbook.

Odds

Not every online sportsbook offers the same odds. Bettors want the very best odds possible. Some odds may be very good on one sportsbook site; others may not be quite as generous. We always check which odds are great and which may be lacking.

Bonuses/promotions

Most NJ online casinos and sportsbook sites offer their bettors a range of bonuses and promotions. Some of which include free spins, deposit bonuses, and free bets. The NJ sportsbook promos offered by one website will be different from those offered by another. Many sportsbooks try to compete with each other, hoping to entice more prospective bettors.

Online games available in NJ

The best sports betting websites offer bettors the chance to wager on almost any sporting event.

Sports bettors can typically choose between the following US sports leagues:

MLB

NBA

NFL

NHL

In addition to this, bettors can also bet on other sports such as

Soccer

Tennis

UFC

MMA

Boxing

Horse Racing

Motorsports

Golf

Many online bookmakers also offer college basketball and football. If this was not enough, some sportsbooks even offer bettors the opportunity to place bets on the Olympics, e-sports, the Academy Awards, and political events.

New Jersey College Sports

New Jersey sportsbooks are unable to post odds or even accept wagers on any New Jersey college teams. This includes the NCAA Tournament, all college bowl games, and any events that take place at Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall or the Prudential Center located in Newark. While this may change sometime in the future, for now, New Jersey sportsbooks are steering clear of these events.

How to bet online

Placing a bet online can be a lot of fun. However, it can also seem a little confusing for novice bettors. The good news is that most online sports gambling sites offer clear instructions.

Using an App

One of the most popular ways to place a bet is via a mobile app. There are many excellent sports betting apps around, suitable for both Android and Apple phones. Apps can be downloaded from the Google Play Store or Apple Store.

Placing a bet via an Android app

In the past, the Google Play Store did not allow gambling apps. These days, however, bettors can visit the Play Store and download the app of their choice. Some online sportsbooks still prefer bettors to download the app via their website.

How to download an Android app:

Visit your chosen sportsbook via your Android device.

Download the app from the website or click on the link to Google’s Play Store.

Join your chosen sportsbook and use the bonus/promotional codes to get free spins and/or a deposit match.

Deposit your funds into your account and choose a game or match to bet on. Follow the instructions and make sure you’re happy with the odds on offer.

How to download an iOS app:

Visit your chosen sportsbook via your Apple device.

Download the app from the website or click on the link to the Apple Store.

Ensure that you have downloaded the app for bettors in New Jersey. Some sportsbooks offer alternative apps for different states. This is due to the differing gambling regulations in each state.

Download the app to your Apple phone or tablet.

Sign up to the sportsbook app and remember to use any bonus code you’re offered.

Deposit your funds and place a bet, making sure you follow the instructions.

You may find it easier to join the desktop site before you download an app. Being familiar with the sportsbook can make navigating your way around the app so much easier.

Using a Web Browser

If you prefer online better as opposed to app betting, you won’t be alone. Many bettors prefer using a web browser. Betting odds are often easier to read, and the desktop site can offer a little more than the apps do. Sportsbooks are usually accessible via most major web browsers such as Chrome, Safari, Internet Explorer, and Firefox. The only choice you have to make is which browser you want to use for online betting.

NJ teams to bet online

Many New Jersey sportsbook betting sites offer bettors the opportunity to bet on NJ teams. Some of the teams include:

New Jersey Devils (Ice Hockey)

Jersey Shore BlueClaws (Minor baseball league)

New Jersey Jackals (Baseball)

Somerset Patriots (Minor baseball league)

Trenton Thunder (Collegiate baseball team)

Betting on local games can be a lot of fun. Bettors can even place bets on their phones while they’re at the games. This takes excitement to a whole new level.

Betting odds

Betting odds found on American sportsbooks always use American odds. These odds can be somewhat confusing to those who are new to the betting world. However, they can be quite easy to understand. After a while, novice bettors may find that they understand the range of odds used.

American Odds

American odds tend to include a + (plus) or – (minus) number. A plus number means that the amount of money someone wins is likely to be more than the amount they wager. The minus number means the winnings could be less than the amount they wager.

It doesn’t matter whether you bet on a + or – number. If the bet is won, the bettor will win back the money they wagered and receive some winnings.

The plus number

The plus number typically represents winnings that are placed on a $100 bet. When the odds are +100, it means the bettor could win $100 on their $100 bet. In other words, they will receive a $200 payout. Bettors do not have to place a $100 bet, this figure is just an example. Bettors can wager as much or as little as they wish.

The minus number

The minus number typically represents how much a bettor would need to wager to win $100. If the odds are -110, it means a player will need to wager $110 to win $100. If a bettor was to bet $100 on odds set at -110, they could win a total of $190.91. The winnings would consist of  $90.91 which is their winnings & the $100 that they wagered.

Moneyline Bets

Moneyline bets are known as being the simplest wagers. This type of wager involves a bettor selecting a sporting event and choosing who they think will win. If the bettor makes an accurate prediction, they will receive their winnings based on the Moneyline odds. The points that are scored during a game do not matter unless the game ends in a tie. In this case, the Moneyline bet will be refunded or lost, depending on the terms that have been set out.

Any underdog player or team will have a larger potential win than the favorite player or team. The favorite player or team tends to have minus odds, whereas the underdog always has plus odds. When a game takes place, both teams are likely to have plus or minus odds, depending on the game and how tight it is.

Point Spread Bets

Point spread bets contain + (plus) and – (minus) odds. However, they represent the points spread as well as the odds. Anything written as at least +100 or less than -100 are odds.

The favorite player or team

The minus odds represent the favorite player or team, and each team starts with points taken from their score. In other words, the favorite player or team has to win by more than is shown in the points spread.

The underdog

The underdog is represented by plus points and each game is likely to have been started with those points added. In other words, the underdog needs to win the game or score fewer points than are shown in the spread. For example, Team A could have odds of +7.5 (-110), Team B could have odds of -7.5 (-110).

In order for Team A to win, they will need to lose the game by 7 points or less. For Team B to win, they will need to win by at least 7 points. If Team A ends up losing, those who bet on their points spread would win. If Team B ends up winning the game by 7 points, the spread bet will be lost if they have only won by 7 points.

Over/Under Bet

Also known as a “Totals bet”, over/under bets can be won regardless of which team or player wins. The sportsbook in question will try to predict the number of points that are scored in the game. Bettors have the chance to wager over or under the total predicted. If the team or player scores exactly what the sportsbook has predicted, bets will be refunded. This is why sportsbooks tend to come up with a half-point score.

Let’s imagine Team A and Team B are playing against each other. The sportsbook could choose to use 35.5 points. If a bettor opts for 36 and the game has a combined score of 36, the bettor will win. If they bet under 36, they lose.

Prop Bets

Prop bets tend to be quite a lot of fun. Also known as “Props” or “Proposition bets,” this type of bet isn’t affected by the outcome of a game. Prop bets involve making a bet on what may or may not happen during a game. Bets such as this could involve which team will score first or the number of throwing yards that take place, for example.

Prop bets can get even more interesting, should you wish them to. It is possible to place a prop bet on whether a flipped coin lands on heads or tails.

Parlay Bets

Parlay betting is one of the most popular types of betting. In some cases, payouts can be very big. For example, if all the parlay legs are hit, a $10 wager can result in a payout of more than $1,000.

Parlay bets always involve a combination of bets in a single wager. Every bet is known as a leg and every leg must win for a payout to be made.

The difficulty with this type of bet is that it isn’t always easy to win. Large payouts are achieved when someone picks multiple winners. Unfortunately, even a parlay bet that contains just three legs loses more often than it wins.

Parlay bets can get very interesting; they can include risk-free parlays, same-game parlays, Moneyline parlay bets, prop bets, and over/unders. If a bettor is lucky enough to win interesting bets such as these, it stands to reason why they could win a lot of money.

Futures Bets

This type of bet is a long-term one that can take place over a whole season. Future bets can include NFL betting online, for example. A bettor could bet that an NFL team could win the league. Bets such as these typically start a long time before the season begins. During the season, the odds typically change dramatically based on injuries, team form, and other factors. Future bets can result in large wins if a bettor makes an accurate prediction.

Teaser Bets

Teaser bets involve swapping points for volume. The bettor will buy some points before they have to parlay at least two selections. A bet such as this usually calls for the bettor to get at least 6 points per football game and 4 per basketball game. The bettor must also pick a minimum of 2 teams. This increases the chance that the bet could fail by at least one leg. Every leg in a teaser bet needs to be won.

Many teaser bets involve at least two teams, but some sportsbooks will allow a maximum of 10 bets per teaser.

In-play bets

In-play bets involve placing a bet after an event has begun. Bets can also be placed right up until an event is just about to end. Football, horse racing, and other events typically see in-play bets. Odds will change over the course of the event and can encourage or dissuade bets.

Some bettors prefer to wager using in-play bets simply because the odds change as the event progresses. They can see who is more likely to win or lose over time. However, the longer a bettor leaves to place a bet, the lower the odds are likely to be.

Benefits of legal online sports betting

There are quite a few benefits associated with online sports betting, some of which include:

Easy banking - Most sportsbooks offer a wide range of deposit and withdrawal options. A bettor’s money must be kept apart from the operator’s expenses, by law. In addition to this, funds tend to be kept very safe.

Authorized apps - Authorized betting apps mean bettors can gamble wherever they are. Using an app can be just as much fun as a desktop site and occasionally more reliable.

Customer service - Those who choose to bet online can enjoy having multiple ways to contact customer services. In addition to this, online sportsbooks want to have a good reputation, meaning they will often try to offer better customer service than their competitors.

Sports betting bonuses - All betting sites bonus offers are somewhat enticing. These bonuses can include free spins, free bet tokens, deposit bonuses, and more.

They’re regulated - Some offshore betting sites have few to no regulations. There can be issues with payment processing and the specific types of bets that can be made. Online sports betting websites offer more security and the regulation means they have to behave ethically.

NJ sports betting history

1992

The Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) prohibited betting outside of the State of Nevada. New Jersey was already reliant on the tax revenue that came from the gambling industry. The State was given 1 year to pass legislation that legalized gambling in the Garden State. Unfortunately, lawmakers were not able to agree on a bill. This resulted in New Jersey prohibiting gaming for many years.

2009

State Senator Raymond Lesniak tried to reverse the ban so that Atlantic City’s gambling industry would stop going into decline. In 2009, a sports betting bill was introduced, and by 2011, the bill was passed by a 2-to-1 margin.

Early 2012

At the beginning of 2012, Governor Chris Christie signed some legislation. This legislation resulted in the legalization of sports betting in New Jersey’s casinos and racetracks.

August 2012

The NHL, NCAA, NFL, NBA, and MLB filed a suit against Governor Chris Christie and the State. A 5-year legal battle had begun.

June 2014

The sports league’s appeal was won, and it seemed as if they had won the whole battle. However, the Supreme Court did not accept the appeal. It was then that State Senator Raymond Lesniak and the State of New Jersey refused to give up. Lesniak introduced legislation that tried to comply with The Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act. There was an attempt to repeal some of the state’s betting prohibitions. In addition to this, Lesniak tried to limit sports betting to race tracks and casinos. Unfortunately, the NHL, NCAA, NFL, NBA, and MLB filed a suit and were granted an injunction.

The State of New Jersey asked the Supreme Court to hear the case that it declined to hear 3 years earlier. The attempt was successful.

December 2017

In December 2017, the attorney Ted Olsen argued that the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) was unconstitutional. The NHL, NCAA, NFL, NBA, and MLB were concerned that sports betting would ruin each league’s integrity. Other groups were also opposed to sports betting and chose to file briefs supporting the leagues.

May 2018

In May 2018, the United States Supreme Court announced that the law violated the 10th amendment. The decision declared the law was unconstitutional and, therefore, allowed sports betting to be legalized. A month later, New Jersey lawmakers passed a law that ensured the sports betting industry would be regulated. Just 3 days later, 2 properties opened a sportsbook in New Jersey. Bettors could now enjoy football, hockey, and horse race betting online, to name but a few betting options.
